Social attachment is vital for human health and welfare. Recent experimental evidence in humans has identified the role of neuroactive hormones, especially the peptide oxytocin, in mediating trusting behaviors. Herein, we test if the endocrinological basis for trust between humans scales up to the country level. Trust pervades nearly every aspect of our daily lives, yet survey data on trust show substantial variation across countries. Using 31 measures of biological, social, and environmental factors associated with hormone levels for a sample of 41 countries, we find that two classes of factors are related to trust: consumption of plant-based estrogens (phytoestrogens), and the presence of environmental conditions that include measures of estrogen-like molecules. Our findings provide preliminary evidence that interpersonal trust at the country level may be related to the intake of neuroactive hormones. 相似文献

The Middle Palaeolithic mineral environment in the South of the Massif Central: preliminary petroarchaeological results. Five Middle-Palaeolithic assemblages coming from archaeological sites in the Haute-Loire and Ardèche dated to isotopic stages 7 to 5 have been studied using a petroarchaeological method based on the optimization of observation techniques at different scales with respect to genetic and postgenetic characteristics of flint raw materials. The method reveals a relatively large collection area for the middle mountain sites (Sainte-Anne I, Baume-Vallée, Le Rond-de-Saint-Arcons, Rochelimagne), but apparently a smaller one for the site of Payre, located nearby the side of the Rhône Valley. For all sites, gathering is predominantly local, but some distant sources are utilised too. The rare exogenous materials, for example the Bedoulian flint from Ardèche identified in the Velay assemblages (Sainte-Anne I, Baume-Vallée) are in fact located in the heart of the massif as well as in secondary deposits and thus do not allow one to establish firm circulation routes for, or certain contact between the relevant human groups. The importance of SULF1 in modulating the activities of multiple signalling molecules is now well established. Several studies, however, reported little or no effect of Sulf1 null mutations, questioning the relevance of this gene to in vivo development. The failure of SULF1 deletion to influence development may be predicted if one considers the involvement of a naturally occurring SULF1 antagonist, generated by alternative splicing of the same gene. We demonstrate that while the previously described SULF1 (SULF1A) enhances Wnt signalling, the novel shorter isoform (SULF1B) inhibits Wnt signalling. Our studies show developmental stage specific changes in the proportions of SULF1A and SULF1B isoforms at both the mRNA and protein levels in many developing tissues, with particularly pronounced changes in developing and adult blood vessels. Unlike SULF1A, SULF1B promotes angiogenesis and is highly expressed in endothelial cells during early blood vessel development while SULF1A predominates in mature endothelial cells. We propose that the balance of two naturally occurring SULF1 variants, with opposing functional activities, may regulate the overall net activities of multiple secreted factors and the associated signalling cascades essential for normal development and maintenance of most tissues. 相似文献

In a previous study, our laboratory showed that young dogs born at sea level (SL) and raised from 2.5 mo of age to beyond somatic maturity at a high altitude (HA) of 3,100 m show enhanced resting lung function (Johnson RL Jr, Cassidy SS, Grover RF, Schutte JE, and Epstein RH. J Appl Physiol 59: 1773-1782, 1985). To examine whether HA-induced adaptation improves pulmonary gas exchange during exercise and whether adaptation is reversible when animals return to SL before somatic maturity, we raised 2.5-mo-old foxhounds at HA (3,800 m) for 5 mo (to age 7.5 mo) before returning them to SL. Lung function was measured under anesthesia 1 mo and 2 yr after return to SL and during exercise approximately 1 yr after return. In animals exposed to HA relative to simultaneous litter-matched SL controls, resting circulating blood and erythrocyte volumes, lung volumes, septal volume estimated by a rebreathing technique, and lung tissue volume estimated by high-resolution computed tomography scan were persistently higher. Lung diffusing capacity, membrane diffusing capacity, and pulmonary capillary blood volume estimated at a given cardiac output were significantly higher in animals exposed to HA, whereas maximal oxygen uptake and hematocrit were similar between groups.
